HIPPOCASTANACEAE(Horse-Chestnut family)
Members of this small family of 15 species in 2 genera are found in northern temperate regions and in South America. [Summary yet to be added] A particle of the shell of the horse chestnut became embedded in the conjunctiva and caused necrosis and ulceration by a local toxic effect (Grant 1974). The flowers and young shoots of some species, especially Aesculus octandra, are said to be capable of causing contact dermatitis (Massey 1941). References |
